A take up bearing is a mounted bearing unit that slides in a frame, so the shaft it carries can be moved to set the tension of a belt or chain. FULI supplies UCT take-up bearing units with UC inserts on 20 to 120 mm shafts, in the 200 and 300 series listed in our catalog. The size tables above give the dimensions for each model. Below: how the take-up assembly works, the frame types, how to choose the size, and what to send with an inquiry.

How a take up bearing works on a conveyor

At the tail end of a belt conveyor, two UCT units carry the tail pulley, one on each side. Each unit mounts in a take-up frame with a positioning screw. Turning the screw moves the unit back and tightens the drive; turning it the other way gives slack for repair or replacement. The positioning screw adjusts the bearing, so set both sides by the same amount.

The same arrangement takes up the stretch as the conveyor belt ages in service. A slack drive slips and wears faster, so the take-up is reset at regular checks. Screw conveyors, bucket elevators and chain drives with a sprocket use take-up units the same way.

Take-up frame types

Frame styles vary by maker. Wide slot and narrow slot take-ups differ in the slot width that fits the rails. Top angle and side mount frames bolt to the top or the side of the structure. Center-pull frames pull the unit from the middle, for heavier loads. Check the slot width and the frame drawing before you order; the UCT dimensions are in the tables above.

Belt tensioning with a take up unit

A screw take-up suits short and medium runs, where the operator sets proper tension by hand. The travel available is the slot length minus the unit length, so check that the frame leaves room for the stretch you expect over its life.

Keep the shaft square, so the drive tracks in the middle. The UC insert has a spherical outside diameter and aligns itself in the housing, which takes up small misalignment between the two sides.

Housing and insert options

The standard UCT unit has a cast iron housing with a grease fitting on top. Mount it so the fitting can be reached. Stainless steel and polymer take-up units are used in food and washdown lines, where cast iron would rust. Heavy drives use a take-up roller bearing, with spherical roller bearings in a larger block. The units on this page are ball bearing units with UC inserts. A UC insert has a wide inner ring, and you lock it to the shaft with two set screws.

How to choose a take up bearing

  1. Bore. The bore code in the designation times five gives the metric size in millimetres: UCT205 fits 25 mm, UCT210 fits 50 mm.
  2. Series. The 200 series is the light duty range. The 300 series uses a larger insert for the same shaft size and suits higher loads.
  3. Housing dimensions. Compare the dimensions in the tables above with your frame or guide rails before ordering. The letters follow the dimension drawing in FULI’s catalog; ask us for the drawing.
  4. Insert. The UCT unit takes a UC insert with set-screw locking of the same size code: a UCT206 carries the UC206 insert bearing.

UCT designation

SegmentMeaning in UCT206
UCBall bearing insert with set screws and spherical outside diameter
TTake-up housing that slides in a frame
2200 series (light duty)
06Bore code: 06 × 5 = 30 mm bore

The same UC insert also goes into a pillow block bearing or a flange bearing housing of the same size.

How to order

Send the designation (for example UCT206), the quantity per size and the destination port to sales@fuli-bearings.com or use the request a quote form. If you are replacing an existing unit, a photo of the housing with the markings and the frame mount dimensions helps us confirm the match. For brand part numbers, see the bearing cross reference.

FAQ

What is a take up bearing?

It is a mounted bearing unit whose housing slides in a frame or on guide rails, so the shaft can be moved along its length. Moving it tightens or slackens the drive. In a UCT unit the insert is a UC ball bearing locked by set screws, and the T housing has slots on both sides that run on the frame.

Where are take up bearings used on a conveyor?

Most often at the tail end of a conveyor, where the take-up sets the tension and makes up for stretch. They are also used on bucket elevators and chain drives that need a short, adjustable travel.

How do I choose the size of a take up bearing?

Start from the bore diameter d of the insert. The last two digits of the designation code the bore: UCT206 has bore code 06, so it fits 30 mm. Choose the 300 series instead of the 200 series when the load is heavier, then check the dimensions against your take-up frame or guide rails.

Does the take up bearing include the frame and adjusting screw?

The UCT designation covers the housing with the insert fitted. The sliding frame and adjusting screw are usually part of the machine or a separate take-up frame. If you need a frame as well, send the travel length and the drawing with your inquiry and we will tell you what we can supply.

What are the different types of take-up bearings?

They differ by frame, material and insert. Frames differ in slot width and in how they mount to the structure. Cast iron suits general duty and stainless steel suits washdown. Most units carry a ball bearing; heavy loads call for roller bearings.

Can I use the same insert as in my pillow block?

Yes, if the size and series match. A UCT206 uses the same UC206 insert as a UCP206 pillow block, so one spare insert can serve both units.
