Water Pump Bearing

Bearings for centrifugal and irrigation water pumps. Deep groove ball bearings by bore size, sealed options for wet environments.

A water pump bearing holds the impeller shaft so the impeller stays centred in its casing and the shaft seal runs true. In most centrifugal and irrigation pumps that bearing is a single row deep groove ball bearing from the 6200 or 6300 series. Where it sits depends on how the pump is built: inside the motor, in a separate bearing frame, or in pillow block units on a belt-driven shaft. This page covers each layout, the seal and clearance choice for wet conditions, the sizes by shaft diameter and the reasons pump bearings fail.

Three pump layouts, three bearing arrangements

Close-coupled pumps. The impeller sits directly on the motor shaft. The pump has no bearings of its own; the two motor bearings carry the impeller load. Replacing them is a motor job. These are usually 6200 or 6300 series deep groove ball bearings with C3 clearance and ZZ or 2RS closures, the same as any electric motor of that size. The electric motor bearing page covers C3 clearance and shield or seal choice in detail.

Bearing-frame (end-suction) pumps. The pump has its own shaft running in a bearing frame, connected to the motor with a coupling. The bearing near the impeller carries mainly radial load. The bearing at the coupling end usually locates the shaft and takes the axial thrust from the impeller. In smaller frames both are deep groove ball bearings; in larger frames the thrust end may use a pair of angular contact ball bearings. Many frames are oil-bath lubricated, with an oil level sight glass or constant-level oiler.

Belt-driven and engine-driven pumps. Irrigation pumps, trash pumps and agricultural pumps are often driven by a belt from a diesel engine or tractor. The pump shaft may run in pillow block bearings bolted to a frame, with the insert bearing carrying the belt pull. These units are sealed, grease-lubricated and often re-greasable through a nipple in the housing.

FULI supplies the bearings and the standard pillow block units on this site. If you also need a pump bearing frame or housing, send the drawing or part number and we will confirm whether we can supply it.

Sealing a pump bearing against water

Water is the main enemy of a pump bearing. It does not need a flood; a slow drip from the mechanical seal or gland packing that runs along the shaft is enough. Water in grease causes rust spots on the raceway, the grease breaks down, and the bearing starts to growl.

A 2RS bearing does not replace the pump’s own shaft seal or the deflector (flinger) ring on the shaft. If the flinger is missing or the seal is leaking, fix that first; a sealed bearing only delays the failure.

In oil-bath frames the bearings must be open so the oil reaches them. Keep the oil at the level the pump maker marks, normally around the centre of the lowest ball. Too low and the bearing runs dry; too high and the oil churns and overheats.

Clearance for pump bearings

Pump shafts fit into the bearing inner ring with interference, and the shaft runs warmer than the bearing frame. Both reduce internal clearance. That is why pump bearings, like motor bearings, are commonly C3. Write the clearance in the designation, for example 6307-2RS/C3. If the original bearing has no clearance mark, it is C0, and you should order the same unless the pump maker says otherwise. The bearing internal clearance guide explains the groups.

Water pump bearing sizes by shaft diameter

The bore is the shaft diameter at the bearing seat. The table shows the 6200 and 6300 series sizes used in most pump frames and pump motors.

For belt-driven pumps on pillow blocks, the common sizes run from UCP204 (20 mm shaft) to UCP210 (50 mm shaft). The UCP 200 series cross reference lists the full range with bolt spacing.

Why water pump bearings fail

  1. Water in the bearing. Rust marks spaced at the ball pitch, milky grease or emulsified oil. Look at the shaft seal and the flinger.
  2. Misalignment. A coupling that is out of line loads the coupling-end bearing in a way it was not designed for. The wear track on the outer ring runs at an angle. Realign with a dial indicator or laser after any motor or pump change.
  3. Belt too tight. On belt-driven pumps, an over-tightened belt overloads the bearing nearest the pulley.
  4. Cavitation and hydraulic imbalance. A pump running far from its design point vibrates and pushes the impeller sideways. The bearings take the extra load.
  5. Wrong oil level in oil-bath frames, either too low or overfilled.
  6. Damage during fitting. Hammering the bearing onto the shaft or pressing through the outer ring dents the raceways and gives a noisy bearing from day one.

If a pump eats a bearing every few months, the cause is almost always one of the first four. A better bearing will not fix it.

How to order water pump bearings

  1. The full number from the old bearing, including the closure and clearance, for example 6306-2RS/C3.
  2. The pump type: close-coupled, bearing frame or belt-driven.
  3. Which end the bearing comes from, if the two are different.
  4. Oil or grease lubrication.
  5. The quantity per size.
  6. Ring marking and box printing: your authorized brand, the factory brand or neutral.

Suffix letters are easy to leave out, and they decide what we make, so please copy them from the old bearing. The guide on how to avoid ordering the wrong bearing lists the common mix-ups.

Send the list to sales@fuli-bearings.com or through the contact page. Before shipment we check rotation smoothness, dimensions, grease fill, rust and appearance. Deep groove ball bearings are Z3V3 vibration grade as standard, with GCr15 chrome steel rings and balls; the steel maker’s material certificate is available on request for OEM and industrial orders. An inspection report can cover dimensions, radial clearance, rotation noise, vibration, appearance, material certificate and batch traceability. Export documents are the commercial invoice, packing list and CCPIT certificate of origin, plus an FTA Form COO where the destination country qualifies.

FAQ

What bearing is used in a water pump?

Most centrifugal water pumps use single row deep groove ball bearings from the 6200 or 6300 series, either in the motor (close-coupled pumps) or in a separate bearing frame. Belt-driven irrigation pumps often use pillow block units on the drive shaft. Larger end-suction pumps may add an angular contact pair at the thrust end.

Should water pump bearings be 2RS?

For grease-lubricated positions close to the pump seal, 2RS is the safer choice because it keeps out moisture from seal drips and condensation. Bearing frames with an oil bath use open bearings so the oil can reach them.

Why do water pump bearings fail?

Water ingress is the most common cause: a leaking mechanical seal or gland lets water travel along the shaft into the bearing. Misalignment between pump and motor, a bent shaft, wrong oil level and cavitation-induced vibration also shorten bearing life.

Is a car water pump bearing the same as a standard bearing?

No. Automotive water pumps use an integral shaft bearing, where the shaft itself forms the inner raceway. It is a different product from the standard deep groove ball bearings on this page. Send the part number and dimensions and we will confirm whether we can supply it.

What clearance do pump bearings need?

Pump bearings that run warm with an interference fit on the shaft are commonly C3. Keep the clearance class marked on the original bearing, for example 6306-2RS/C3.
