Type a tapered roller bearing number such as 30206 or 30208 into the box below, or type a bore such as 40, and the table filters to match. When the number is a recognised tapered roller designation, a breakdown appears above the table explaining what each part of it means.
How to read a tapered roller bearing number
A metric tapered roller bearing number follows the general rolling-bearing designation system in ISO 15, with the boundary dimensions for this bearing type set out in ISO 355 [1]. Reading left to right:
- First digit, 3: single row tapered roller bearing.
- Next two digits, the dimension series: 02 is the light series (written 302), 03 is the medium series (303), and 22 marks the steeper-contact-angle light series (322). A 322 bearing takes more axial (thrust) load than the 302 size at the same bore, at the cost of a wider, heavier bearing.
- Last two digits, the bore code: for codes 04 and above, multiply by 5 for the bore in millimetres, so 06 is 30 mm and 10 is 50 mm. Codes 00, 01, 02 and 03 are fixed exceptions at 10, 12, 15 and 17 mm, the same exceptions used on deep groove ball bearings. A bore that does not fall on a 5 mm step is written after a slash instead of a two-digit code, for example 320/28 for a 28 mm bore.
The number on a tapered roller bearing covers the complete bearing, the cone (inner ring with rollers and cage) and the cup (outer ring) together [2]. The width given in the table on this page, T, is the total width of the assembled pair, not the width of the cone alone.
Inch and J-line tapered roller bearings use a different numbering style
Inch-series tapered roller bearings, built to ABMA boundary dimensions rather than ISO 355, do not follow the digit pattern above. Instead the cone and cup each carry their own part number, and a letter prefix marks the load series: L and LM for light series, M for medium, H and HM for heavy [3]. J-line tapered roller bearings use metric boundary dimensions but the same cone-and-cup, letter-prefix numbering, with JL, JM and JH prefixes. Type a number with one of these prefixes into the box above and the breakdown names the prefix and confirms it is a cone or cup part number rather than a combined designation.
Finding a size by bore instead of by number
If you only know the shaft size, type the bore in millimetres into the same box, for example 40, and the table filters to every tapered roller size FULI has checked at that bore. From there, compare the dimension series (302, 303 or 322) against the duty your bearing needs to decide between them, or send us the application through the inquiry form and we will recommend a series.
Models not covered yet
A model is left out of the table while its size has fewer than two published size tables behind it, or has not passed our own check. If your model or bore is missing, send it to us through the inquiry form below along with the housing or application details, and we will tell you what we can confirm. FAQ
What does the 30 in 30206 mean?
The first digit, 3, marks a single row tapered roller bearing. The next two digits, 02, are the dimension series: light, in this case. Together 302 reads as the 30200 dimension series, and the catalogue groups 30205 to 30212 under that heading.
Why do 30208 and 32208 have the same bore and OD but different weights?
Both are 40 mm bore, 80 mm OD. 30208 is dimension series 02 (light) at 19.75 mm total width and 32208 is the steeper-angle 322 series at 24.75 mm total width, so 32208 has a wider cone and cup and weighs more. Look up both in the table above to compare the width.
What is the bore code exception for 00, 01, 02 and 03?
For bore codes 04 and above, multiply the code by 5 to get the bore in millimetres: 08 is 40 mm. Codes 00, 01, 02 and 03 are fixed exceptions: 10, 12, 15 and 17 mm. A bore that falls between the 5 mm steps is written after a slash instead, such as 320/28 for a 28 mm bore.
Are the cone and cup sold separately?
They can be. The number on a tapered roller bearing identifies the complete bearing, cone and cup together, and the total width T in the table is for the assembled pair. If you order cones and cups as separate parts, tell us in the inquiry so we quote and pack them as separate line items.
My number has a letter prefix like LM or HM instead of starting with 3. Is it still a tapered roller bearing?
Yes. LM, HM, L, M and H are prefixes used on inch-series tapered roller bearings (ABMA / Timken-style numbering), and JM, JL and JH are used on J-line tapered roller bearings with metric boundary dimensions. Both number the cone and cup as separate part numbers rather than one combined number. Type the number above to see which prefix you have and what it marks.
